WHOA! It has been a long time, I know! Sorry, to my invisible, maybe non-existent readers. Well, if you are out there, maybe you might want to know what has been happening over here. I will tell you...in a series of photographs!

First: A trip to France

A month of roaming, taking classes in traditional jewelry making in a small French Village, getting into crazy situations in Paris and most importantly, eating amazing foods!

For now: NEW DESIGNS! This collection is really dear to me because some of the material I have used I have had for a year and the ideas I have had for several! I just kept giving up before I got very far. So, I learned that staying with something, seeing it through even when it is hard and may look horribly ugly, can produce magical results. (sort of a life metaphor huh?) These pieces have recycled Sari material, hemp cord, brass, gold fill chain and some sterling silver.

and...this is only the beginning. A collaboration with painted silk is underway, as well as tons of amazing sari silk pieces. I have decided a little more boldness and color is needed all around.

i've been on a real design rampage.

busily collecting bits of inspiration.

just back from a visit with family and friends,

below is what i gathered. a total treasure hunt. the stories

are as follows.

item # 1: geometric design earrings, found at a thrift shop

one afternoon while poking around with my dad, who by

the way is a great shopper!

(much to my moms horror! she thinks they are ugly!)

item # 2: sea urchins given to me by my grandma. they were

given to her by my great grandma, who was a rock hound. she

kept them in an old blue jar above her kitchen cupboards.

item #4: wing earrings excavated from a etsy shop

item # 5: beautiful crocheted necklace, made by my dear mom

in an hour last night!

item #6 Charm from an Ethiopian store in Seattle. I found this

little place with my dear friend by way of an Ethiopian

convenient store.

item # 7 Necklace once purchased by my grandmother

who promises it was expensive and a splurge. Looks

rather fabulously 1980's to me!

So, as you can see I am finding bits of beauty in

even the most odd of places.

this past weekend our dear friends got married.

we rode in a 45 person bike procession from the

ceremony to the reception. their tandem bike was

tied with a string of beer cans and a cardboard

sign reading, "just married"...

i could not resist the blossoms and the photos of

rowdy boys pretending to be good.

all in all a good sat. and a chance to give some

extra love to a sweet couple of friends.

I know! It has been forever. I was not sure I wanted to blog anymore, not sure I wanted to spend too much time in front of the computer. Then, I decided I would strike a balance and save some time for art and craft, reading and walks and well, a blog post.

So, today, a felting project. Little icelandic wool rug. I ordered the wool from a farmer. It was so nice to work with. The process is easy, but very physical, so I am not quite done. I am posting a few of the in process photos and will show you the finished piece tomorrow!

In other news, I have been gearing up for trade shows and making new jewels. I have been exploring layering, asymmetry and the symbolic quality behind each piece. Tiny sculptural pieces for your neck.

There may be some big news for Paper Wings jewelry, but I am not ready to share yet, since I am not sure if it will actually unfold. We are keeping fingers and toes crossed.

The last month. Oh, the last month.....I almost lost someone incredibly dear to me in an act of violence. My foundation was shaken and my way of navigating in the world is different, changed. I am beside myself with joy that my loved one is alive and moving through her days strong and brave.

Tonight we decided to camp outside. It was the most excited I have been about something in quite a few days. Sometimes, it is just like that something small to shift everything.

over 100 year old bus ticket stubs, half eaten hats, love letters

and now it is all left behind. i think it is my turn to give light to

these old things. my friends took some things home too. giving

them a new purpose. 100 years later, i wonder where they will

all go? how many life times of stories will they hold?

i have a lot going on over here. new projects in the works.

exciting changes. something new to report, but not just yet.

feeling ready to take african dance lessons again. realizing

how fast time goes, it makes we want to do things. wild things.

Paper Wings needed a new image, a re-vamp. I found a model at Ken's bakery, a photographer that a friend knew and a whole bunch of amazing clothes from my favorite boutique Tumbleweed (on loan from some of my favorite ladies in town ). We spent most of the day on Sauvie Island photographing in fields, with lamas and inside old barns. So many new ideas flood in these days. I am excited to change the face of my designs and to show you some of them soon. I am working on a new collection called "maps". I actually use a torch! A small miracle in the world of Paper Wings......

i know i have not written in awhile. sometimes i like to just create a story with the pictures. speaking of stories, we moved. it was a big move. a hard one, but it is done and i am feeling better. i think my guy is too.

today, i finally unpacked some of my art supplies in my little studio/shed outside. i also went to some garage sales and found the most amazing pottery treasures. 50 cents each. the woman said they are usually $200, but she didn't like them. not sure i understood, but i did understand i scored some really incredible art. also the little table with the lamp on it above. $3.00 for real. it is old and i love anything old.

Well, I moved into a new studio for my jewelry design business. I am so happy to be working away from home. I never thought I would say that! It has been so good though. There is something to be said for separating work from home. As things have been going, it seems that my business has a mind of it's own, it wants growth. Big changes are on the horizon, but it is too early to tell you.....I will let you in on the secret when I know more. Until then, I let you into my studio for a few peeks. The old wood makes everything so warm and amazing. I love it.

Seattle Senses

Mom and I visited Seattle together to see Ira Glass of "This American Life" give a talk. I asked her if she would do an art project with me in Pike's Place market. We each took 20 minutes and took photographs of the different senses. (inspired by Liz). It is amazing how one can see things in such different ways, deeper ways, when we choose to really "see". I loved my time with my mom~

i was gone a little while. wandering. i was not on vacation, although i wish i was. my hands ache from making so many things. i hope for empty spaces filled with inspiration and time, loads of time in january. i need it. i did go to visit friends, but managed to work, because orders were due. we went to seattle one day, three of us. i included a few photos of my walk in the city....

somebody asked me today what i do when i feel like i have been just stuck in the house all day. unable to motivate myself to get out. i told her, i think of places that inspire me and i make myself go to them. for refuge. one of the places i went to one day for inspiration is now a place i am spending two days a week at. another jewelry artist needed some help and so i open her studio/store front and get to work on my own things while i keep the place open until she comes in. i like it, it gets me out of the house. her space is very lovely and so inspiring. wanna peek?

so, as orders wind down, i am making notes of how i want to revamp things. what i want to create.....i've got some ideas up my sleeve. not just jewelry, but art too. i will share as things unfold.

what is everyone out there doing?

i will try not to fall off the face of the earth again. i like being around...i do.

i read some mary oliver poems the other night to a friend while she drew sketches. what a beautiful way to spend time . i know a friend out there who will wish i could come over and read her poems, while we sip tea. her dog would be close by sleeping. a baby growing in her belly would be listening.....just an idea for you all out there.

happy harvest time. we took a trip to sauvie island and gathered some root vegetables, a pumpkin and a few photos. there is a pumpkin pie in the oven with some spices thi s dear lady sent to me in the mail. oh, they smell incredible. so, i wanted to tell you about a few things that i love that you may love too! things to look at, peruse... here's a list. some treats for you on halloween~

1. clothing made by my friend (hand dyed, all natural fibers)--i happen to be her model...not sure how i feel about it yet, but i love her clothes.

2. liz's "be present be here" retreat for february.

3. this ladies blog! a local beauty who takes amazing photos and always knows where the best things are happening.

4. a place i visit often that houses some of my favorite art ever~

ok. so just a few little places listed. i thought of more the other day and cannot recall now. i am not surprised judging by the mishaps that have already occurred tonight. remember that pumpkin pie i mentioned earlier? well, i went to add a pan of pumpkin seeds to the oven and forgot what was baking on the top shelf. oh, yes, pumpkin pie! imagine, an oven full of pie filling, not to mention it went onto the pan of seeds! do not fear! i had extra filling and the seeds are now washed and cooked. good thing. i was about to melt into a small sunken pile. i remember my friend steph (mentioned above) telling me about how she once dropped this amazing mushroom frittata she was making all over her kitchen floor. her whole family helped save it with spatulas. it was oh so sweet. i felt better thinking of this story....ayal came to my rescue.....oven is clean, pie is baking..ahh.

i am going to go and carve a pumpkin now. thinking about all of you out there, wondering what you are all up to this eve~

it has been awhile, yes.

sometimes i think about not returning here as it seems i have so few readers and am mostly just writing to myself.....but i love the creative outlet.

these last few weeks have been such a huge growing experience. i got buried under a pile of work and felt completely overwhelmed. how could i possibly make those hundreds of pieces of jewelry? last week it seemed near impossible. today, it seems all ok. like somehow, it will get done. i do not know how, but i trust the process.

everything i do to nurture myself involves slowing down..

i am reminded of that today as i finish orders and watch out the window as life happens. sometimes it is just so scary to run your own business, to trust that it will all turn out. i am creating mental lists to help this process of slowing down.

trees. the morning leading to hot springs

and breakfast at a cafe we both once knew.

*ayal, my love and i, lived in the same

town once at the same time many years

before we would ever meet and fall in love.

so, today this is the cafe we sat at, the

one that happened to be in that particular

town where we never actually met.

we camped last night near a lovely river.

ayal wanted to lead me to it's bank in the

dark. i gave small protests until he gently

took my hand and lead me through the woods.

he was a careful guide, warning me when there

were holes in the path and tree stumps in the

way. safely we reached the waters edge and listened

to the night sounds the river made. someday you

should listen, it is very different than in the

day, softer, deeper.

what are you up to?

around here many things changing. jewelry making has hit it's all time high. can i keep up? hiring a sweet lady to come and help for a time. perhaps a long time. i had a huge blessing bestowed upon me this week from the MOMA in San Francisco. I cried out of sheer gratitude, delight and the magic of this creative life.

Sketches and Wonderings

As I wander back into life here in Portland, all around me looks different.

3 weeks alone served me well.

New perspective, new ways of seeing.

Sometimes, I look around in my home, my studio, my life and the colors

all seem dull. How does this happen? What changes when one leaves and returns? Now

I look around and all I see vibrates with radiance and beauty.

I am really wondering about the creative process lately and what goes on in other artists

lives. How do they walk through their struggles and stuck places?

A brilliant artist friend of mine has been doing photo interviews on her

blog and I love this idea. I love the idea of creating dialogue with another person

we may never get to meet. One sometimes forgets that they are not the only one trying to make

their way in the world. So, I am thinking about a few souls who may assist me with a series of interviews on the creative process. I listened to an inspiring talk here

with Elizabeth Gilbert author of "Eat, Pray, Love" on nurturing creativity. It is worth listening to if you are serious about making art and want some darn good advice.

I will ponder and see what unfolds.

PS. I have changed my blog title and name as you see. Yes, because being new to the blog world I recently discovered that another beautiful artist/blogger has titled a series of workshops she created, "Unravelling". Out of respect to her and just plain old wanting to be original I have shape-shifted into a new name. It suits me I think.

over me as I sat with my writing book and

favorite pen. I remember in a dance class I

once took when we would have trouble with the steps

my teacher would say, "Just let the dance wash over you"

This is what my hours and minutes are

like a slow and subtle washing over.

I am in a place I once lived. Exploring

all over again, Hawaii and it's smells. Old memories

lie in all of it. The buildings, the sounds of

flip flops on the pavement, the same tea at the

cafe I used to work at. I remember and I whisper

"Wash over me, Wash over me".

Here is a new member of the family of sculptural dolls. There has been pirate gypsies, quiet fairies, two headed men in crowns and now? A monk? I am not sure what he is, but here he is. He took a rest in the grass and is now living above the fireplace with the rest of the crew. Sometime I will take a family photo.

I have also included some photos of the pages of my wax/cardboard book. It has pieces of bark in it and small paintings. I am trying to remember how to bind it.

Yesterday I walked in the middle of the street, it was a very busy street. Oh, but don't worry many people were walking there too! It was closed off for an event called " Last Thursday". This amazing event is something like carnival meets canvas. Artists set up selling their wares while musicians, stilt walkers, marching bands, dancers on top of vans, dj's and vaudeville performers have their way with the streets. I love it. I like to go alone, because there is so much to take in and I cannot talk, I can only look in wonder and awe. Who are all of these amazing people I wonder? I use my Diana camera to photograph the stilt walkers, stop to talk to my favorite clothing vendor, compliment a 60 year old on her beauty (she gasps), laugh, listen and go back home to my love to excitedly report my findings. Sigh.

so much is new....but first let me introduce the "origins" line of jewelry from paper wings. i am having fun working with leather and thicker silver....keeping with the organic style of my line.

after much debating i have decided to go on a solo expedition. just me. a dear friend has a house for me to stay in on the big island of hawaii. so in june, off i go.

in winter or fall i am thinking of going here. to finally complete the body of art i have been working on. i have always wanted to try an artist in residency program. so, why not here? the idea of being totally undistracted and able to just focus on art is very appealing.

If anyone has ever read Tom Robbins books you may remember a question one of his characters i asks, "How do you make love stay?" I am not sure there is a simple answer for this or any other question involved in "making something stay". Life is just simply full of impermanence. Yet, I am wondering if finding true joy is something that can be made a little more permanent. I decided to start with the small things.

Light shining through the windows I sit and ponder, let the day soak in. Last night I dreamt I lost my love. In the moment it happened I said to myself that is why it is so important to really love well in each moment. He was gone and all I had was the moment before. It was devastating and I was so glad to wake up.

Oh, but a cherished day..each delicious second with my dear friend. Writing letters, making art, walks......We just don't know. We figure we do, that we have it figured out....but it all is just a simple mystery. Wrapped with golden paper and streaks of sunlight~
